Pub crawl in Decatur

Veteran ‘Pub Scouts’ in town last night for a pub crawl of Decatur and Little Five Points. Met up at Mileybright and then took Uber ride into Decatur. One couple’s son (student at GA State) joined the group. Plan was to sharing snacks along the way instead of a big meal at one stop. Dena was drinking wine, Chuck in charge of sampling whiskey, Michael, Lisa and Sean trying beer and ales. Starting in Decatur: 1) Iberian Pig, for shared steak and tapas snacks 2) Twains, little BBQ 3) Brick Store, meatloaf Off to Little Five Points: 4) Wrecking Bar, cheese board and sweet potato pie Everything served at Wrecking Bar is made fresh inhouse and everything on tap is brewed onsite. High regards for Alt ale! Having lived in Germany, the Huff’s were impressed. 5) The Porter, closed it down Back to Decatur: 6) Leon’s Full Service, closed it down Little slow going wandering in for breakfast this morning… In need of coffee. All our Scouts have won their badges for this outing! They are already making plans for their next pub crawl. Joe and I look forward to their... read more

Wild Heaven Craft Beers tour

Wild Heaven Craft Beers tour

What to do on a lovely, warm winter Saturday? Visit our neighborhood brewery. How lucky we are to have a brewery located in Avondale Estates crafting some really delish Belgian-style beers. The brewery opens to the public for tours and tastings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Tours are free, but for sampling the beers you buy a goblet or pint glass for $12pp. You are given six tokens that are good for six 5.5 oz pours. I fell in love with two of the dark brews, Eschaton and Civilization. The Eschaton, an all-malt Quadrupel, picks up some warm vanilla and oak from time spent in wine casks. Civilization is English Barleywine with the addition of dried Prussian lemons, tart cherries, and cranberries. It’s got the yeasty baked bread and tropical fruit going for it. The creative brewmasters have aged some of the Civilization in tequila casks and the outcome is named Height of Civilization. Its ready and will be hand bottled, so as not to spill and waste any of the brew. Visit their website for descriptions of the beers and food pairings. Some of Wild Heaven beers can be found on tap at Corner Pub, Brick Store, Leon’s Full Service and other local restaurants. Pick up six or four-pack bottles at Ale Yeah!, Hop City, Greens and Towers. We also have two other nearby breweries, Blue Tarp Brewing and Three Taverns Brewery, located down the street in Decatur. They also offer weekend tours. A warm day in January is a fine time to get out and work in the garden. Joe planted hundreds of bulbs and we look forward to a spectacular spring show. Already, we have a few crocus, blue hyacinths, tulips, iris and daffodils popping up. I’m in charge of the kitchen garden in the back yard. Taking the time to weed. Connie Cat is my... read more
Eagle Eye Book Shop

Eagle Eye Book Shop

I love books. My favorite indie bookstore is near Emory University in Decatur. This is THE PLACE to go for author book signings. Stuart Woods, Karin Slaughter, Mary Kay Andrews are all regular guest authors and regular shoppers at Eagle Eye. Besides a large collection of signed books, the shop offers a nice selection of used books. I just ordered “The Drunken Botanist” by Amy Stewart as a gift for a friend. (I love my signed copy that was a gift from Michele.) Whenever in the area, stop in. For more information visit Eagle Eye Book Shop... read more

Mileybright ‘stands in’ as Selma

Filming of ‘Selma’ at Mileybright Farmhouse. Movie people have been filming at the Avondale High School recently. The other morning I noticed some cool old trucks being unloaded at the film crew base camp across the street from Mileybright Farmhouse. Turns out additional filming would be in the church parking lot behind our house. You don’t actually see our house, but the parking lot was set up to portray the approach to the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Montgomery, AL, for the movie ‘Selma’ currently filming in the Atlanta area. The march from Selma to Montgomery on March 7, 1965 is known as ‘Bloody Sunday.’ Joe and I hid behind trees to watch some of the filming as police chased and clobbered the peaceful marchers. Did not see producers Oprah Winfrey or Brad Pitt, oh... read more
