Mothers Day weekend (May 11-12) in Avondale Estates means it’s time once again for Art B Que. What can be better than small town arts festival with great bar-b-que and music? Two full days of music! Bonus, one of our guests, Ted, is playing in a band, Bas Clas, at 4pm on Saturday. Artist studios will be open to tour as well as artist booths set up in the street. Lots of fun and not to be missed.

Decatur Garden Tour

It’s Spring, finally! Time for the Decatur Garden Tour 2013, Saturday April 27 and Sunday April 28.

Fifteen gardens are on the tour including the Oakhurst Community Garden, where I buy my baby plants for our farmhouse garden. Other favorite gardens on the tour are Ryan Gainey’s back yard, and the Woodlands Garden (a forest stroll in the city). Pumpkin Festival at Stone Mountain Park

It’s time for the 10th Annual Pumpkin Festival at Stone Mountain. Autumn is in the air. The yellow daisies are in bloom. We encourage guests of Mileybright Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast to celebrate the fall season at Stone Mountain Park.

Decatur Book Festival

Labor Day weekend celebrates the end of summer and the annual Decatur Book Festival. Not to be missed, August 31 – September 2.

The AJC Decatur Book Festival is the largest independent book festival in the country and one of the five largest overall. Since its launch, more than 900 world-class authors and 260,000 festival-goers have crowded the historic downtown Decatur square to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, live music, parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops, and more.

Many authors are on hand. Something of everyone’s interest. Loved listening to Hal Needham, my favorite stuntman, speak about his life experiences last year.

I’ll post more information when the sessions are announced.

Texas week

Don’t know what it is, but we have had loads of guests from Texas this past week. Jim, from Hondo, coordinated a week long international seminar for Nero science studies at Agnes Scott College. Steve and Kristy flew in from Houston to see a band playing at Eddies’ Attic and explore confederate battle grounds. Connie and Stacy drove from Houston to attend a storytellers workshop. Mixed in with all the Texas folk was a couple from Fredricsburg, VA, and another couple from Chicago.

Another couple driving from Dallas is expected this coming Saturday.

Hot days in the garden

Spend many mornings watering our parched garden. Record highs for Atlanta. Our thermometer shows over 100F last couple of days. Lucky our harvest is looking good. Lots of cherry tomatoes to pick while the slicers are a little slower to ripen. Picking lots of squash; yellow, delecato, patty pans and zucchini. Yum, stuffed squash blossoms and fried green tomatoes! Baked zucchini bread today for our guest breakfast.

Cocktails in the Garden

What fun Eloise and I had Thursday night at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.

Each Thursday evening in June you can enjoy the gardens at night. Bars are set up throughout the gardens serving wine, beer and cocktails.

Yummy chef’s demonstration in the edible garden serving a fresh made Salmon spread. (Think that is a good idea for morning bagels for our guests.) Was thrilled that for once my kitchen garden looked better than the one at ABG!

Loved exploring the orchid house and conservatory at night. All misty and enchanting with frogs and the resident quail chirping.

There was also a DJ playing tunes near the Chihuly Fountain.

The Fairies in Woodlands!

Woodlands Garden is thrilled to announce the imminent return of the Fairy Gardens and Houses, this coming Sunday, May 27, 2-4 pm. Last year visitors to this delightful event were charmed by miniature houses built from bark, branches, berries, seed heads, leaves and other natural materials. Fairy Gardeners from Skyland Trail’s horticulture and art therapy groups design and build the houses. Staff and clients will be available at Fairy Headquarters to answer questions about this nationally popular pastime for self-expression and horticultural therapy.

Decatur Arts Festival

Memorial Day weekend kick starts the summer with the annual Decatur Arts Festival. Artist from across America and many local artists, show their work in the square in downtown Decatur. Our buddies Donna and Graham Hill display their amazing metal sculptures each year. Get a preview of Graham’s work by linking here; Rocwood Studios.

The festival starts with an Art Walk on Friday between 5-10pm. Artist Market is Saturday (10am – 6pm) and Sunday (11am – 6pm). Music, dance, fun for all!
