Mileybright ‘stands in’ as Selma

Filming of ‘Selma’ at Mileybright Farmhouse.

Selma movie

Movie people have been filming at the Avondale High School recently. The other morning I noticed some cool old trucks being unloaded at the film crew base camp across the street from Mileybright Farmhouse. Turns out additional filming would be in the church parking lot behind our house. You don’t actually see our house, but the parking lot was set up to portray the approach to the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Montgomery, AL, for the movie ‘Selma’ currently filming in the Atlanta area. The march from Selma to Montgomery on March 7, 1965 is known as ‘Bloody Sunday’. Joe and I hid behind trees to watch some of the filming as police chased and clobbered the peaceful marchers. Did not see producers Oprah Winfrey or Brad Pitt, oh well.

Arborists visit Mileybright

tree trimming at Mileybright

Our 100+ year old trees have been in serious need of limb trimming. Today, and the next few days, we have a professional crew on the grounds to remove some huge limbs and clean up the canopy. These are some really, really big trees soaring to 100+ feet. Pretty amazing to watch these guys work.

Decatur garden tour 2014

Decatur Garden Tour 2014

It’s time again for one of my favorite spring activities, the annual tour of Decatur gardens.
This year’s 26th anniversary tour dates are April 26 and 27th. The theme is the woodland garden and features eight private gardens and three public treasures: the Wylde Center, Hawk Hollow, and the Woodlands Garden. There will be plant sales at two locations, a children’s art market, musical performances and an opportunity to take in our presenting sponsors beautiful rose garden by candlelight Saturday evening.

Lovely Rose Hill, home and garden of tour sponsors Chris Fichtel and Liam Simmons is featured on Saturday evening.

A favorite of mine is the Woodlands Garden, a seven-acre nature preserve tucked away behind a busy Decatur intersection. Massive oaks and towering tulip trees protect understory shrubs and wildflowers along winding trails. Take a walk through the woods to see different plants during different seasons. Open to the public throughout the year, it is a wonderful forest getaway right in the city!

Mileybright Farmhouse has a large kitchen garden. I get most of my heirloom tomato plants, specialty peppers and herbs from the Wylde Center at the Oakhurst Community Garden. Always fun to visit the chickens and see the active bee hives at this garden.

At last, a fun dining option a short walk from Mileybright Farmhouse. Jim Stacy, a favorite dining critic, TV personality and corndog vendor has opened Pallookaville in Avondale Estates. For families and adults alike. Yummy.

Photography location

Michael Nelson and crew returned to Mileybright Farmhouse for another location photo shoot. They were here in the spring to shoot romantic novel covers in the garden. This autumn visit was to photograph interior shots in the Judge Candler guest room, hallway and on the staircase. The digital proofs I saw were very dramatic. The young models, so beautiful! We look forward to seeing the finished images, including some for me to use on this website.

Here are two images from the spring visit. Link to see Michael’s portfolio.

fresh paint!

apartment bedroom with queen bed

We finished the exterior painting, so it is now time to update the interiors. Joe and I knocked out painting one of the apartment bedrooms in one day. With the addition of new artwork, this small guest room is ready for our next visitor.

We also had the vintage sofa and chair seat cushions reupholstered in brown leather. Found wonderful needlepoint pillows of red tail hawks at our neighborhood consignment shop, Finders Keepers. Hawks and falcons are often seen souring over Mileybright Farmhouse.
